As long as we have wars and short-term gains govern our judgements we cannot be go ancestors or assure a livable future on earth for the upcoming decades.

This comes from one of our speakers who will join us today, Astrid Wynne Rogers as a reaction to this article: Texas Adds NatWest to Divestment List for “Boycotting” Energy Companies.

"Climate Wars intersect with culture wars and this is one of the latest examples.

The State of Texas adds another major bank to its divestment list because of its stance on energy investments. Texas Comptroller Glenn Hagar has in the past attributed banks' refusal to back fossil fuels as “a broader movement in the financial sector to push a social agenda and prioritize political goals over the economic health of their clients.”

Texas is not alone in this. Last year 19 Governors joined an anti-ESG coalition, stating that: "The proliferation of ESG throughout America is a direct threat to the American economy, individual economic freedom, and our way of life, putting investment decisions in the hands of the woke mob to bypass the ballot box and inject political ideology into investment decisions, corporate governance, and the everyday economy."

It seems that political approaches to financial decisions works both ways. The divestment statute list on the Texas Comptroller website (below) is driven by ethical choices.

There is also the argument that finance is driven by spending. One person's "woke mob" (to borrow the language of the anti-ESG movement) is someone else's "prosumer".

To make money, you have to please the populace... unless you can find a way of exerting the kind of control that makes their views irrelevant. History tells us that this tends to come back and bite you.

Some commentators feel like the anti-ESG movement is fighting a losing battle.

The Corporate Social Reporting Directive mandates ESG reporting for all companies in scope and their supply chain, which means that state laws will be superseded by international finance.

However, if large portions of the world feel like they are being forced into this, then we have a problem.

Analysis says we have lost 69% of our species and may have breached a 1.5 degree temperature rise. We are experiencing extreme weather across the world.

Water shortage is becoming more acute in the US and in Europe. These are issues faced by all of us and we need to find a way of solving them together."
