3 Steps for Leaders to Excel in High-Pressure Decision-Making
As leaders, we get to make decisions every day. Sometimes, these decisions are high-stakes and made under pressure, and with emotions running high, they can have dangerous consequences for our organization’s future.
So, what is the solution?
We need to have a predefined process of asking questions that will get us out of our emotional triggers and reactive mode to see the reality in front of us accurately.
Here are 3 steps to help with that:
1- Pause and Breathe: When you feel overwhelmed, take a moment to stop and breathe. This helps to calm your mind and body. It’s a simple step, but it can make a huge difference. By pausing, you give yourself the chance to step back from the immediate emotional reaction and look at the situation more objectively.
2- Ask Clear Questions: Once you’re calm, ask yourself, “What is the real issue here?” and “What are the possible solutions?” This helps you focus on facts and not just emotions. Clear, focused questions help to clarify your thoughts and bring the real issues to light. They also help you to think about the different ways you could handle the situation, opening up more options and better solutions.
3- Seek Input: Talk to others and get their perspectives. This can provide new insights and help you make a more balanced decision. Sometimes, when we are too close to a problem, it’s hard to see all the options. By seeking input from others, we can gain new viewpoints and ideas that we might not have considered on our own. Collaboration and discussion can lead to better and more informed decisions.
By following these steps, we can make better decisions, even under pressure. This approach not only helps in making sound decisions but also strengthens our leadership skills. It allows us to lead with clarity and purpose, ensuring that our decisions align with our goals and values.
Reminder: Engage with the Consensus Document!
Don't forget to review and share our Consensus Document with both local and global authorities, as well as policymakers active in the climate sector who are seeking relevant data. Same with SDG journalists.
We've begun distributing it across various platforms, from the UN to specialized research sites, aiding other passionate contributors by providing actionable, digestible information. While it's not perfect, it represents a solid beginning.
You will find our Consensus Document here.
We're committed to learning and improving from every interaction and every piece of feedback we receive.
